Quote from AmandaL on May 9, 2024, 10:06 amHi,
I am researching my 3x Great Grandmother Marie Fanny Edouard Jean Marie, I have come across a brick wall with finding who her parents are and where she may have been born. I believe she could be possibly from the Edouard Betsy family, their surnames vary from Betsy, Edouard Betsy, Edouard and Jean Marie from researching my ancestors. In the CGMR I see her name as Fanny Edouard or Fanny Mason but in her daughter’s birth and marriage certificate she uses the surname “Edouard Jean Marie”.
I do know Fanny married William Mason who was born in Rivière Noire in 1834. I was able to retrieve her death details - 31 Mar 1880 in Port Louis. Fanny and William have two children Isabellah Mary and Lionel Edward Mason.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Amanda.

The surname JEAN MARIE exists in our database, but not EDOUARD JEAN MARIE. I think that in fact the father was Edouard JEAN MARIE.
(as an aside, PATRONYMS should be written in capital letters and first names in small letters, which leads to confusion when patronymis are derived from first names.)
I have not found the people you are referring to in the database. Could you attach the death certificate dated 31 March 1880 in Port Louis, perhaps I could suggest a lead.
I'm sorry I didn't see your message earlier.

Thank you for the information about the surnames, I do have a 4th Great Grandfather named Edouard Jean Marie Betsy, is it possible that he could be the father? His wife (my 4th G Grandmere) is Philomene Marie Josèphe Denis Pierre Ronefort, the Ronefort/Romefort part is still a mystery.
I have searched for the surname as Edouard and Edward, also Jean Marie and nothing yet on the database.
I don’t have Fanny’s death certificate, only a table of deaths from 1871-1880 that was given to me.
Hopefully this attachment can help.
Merci Beaucoup,
Amanda

I understand that the Mauritian civil status system has been inherited from the English system. Women take the husband's name when they marry, which means that the maiden name goes into the 2nd zone. You have to search the available records to find this maiden name. It should be in the marriage record and perhaps in Fanny's death record.
I therefore suggest you to trace their marriage. Write to Civil Status asking them for the marriage of William MASON to Marie Fanny EDOUARD (this information does not appear in our database, but I would remind you that it is not exaustive).
Also ask for Fanny's death certificate, giving the date, place and references (register 1 folio 475).Civil Status Division
