Publishing my family tree

Publishing is getting your research out to your family in some form or other. Nowadays, with the advent of computer technology, it is possible to produce a book in virtiual form that would be downloadable and could even be printed on a desktop printer.

Traditional book publication

The traditional route would call for a series of actions that would finally lead to the printed and bound document. It involves copy writing, editing, Indexing and table of contents, choosing and inserting illustrations, formatting the book, proof reading, type setting, Getting ISBN numer and applying for copyright. printing and finally binding the document.

You need to be sure that it is what you really want. In which case, you should absolutely get an estimate of costs from a publisher or printer.

Electronic books

An electronic book (variously: e-book, eBook, e-Book, ebook, digital book or e-edition) is a book-publication in digital form, consisting of text, images, or both, readable on computers or other electronic devices.  Although sometimes defined as "an electronic version of a printed book", many e-books exist without any printed equivalent. Commercially produced and sold e-books are usually intended to be read on dedicated e-readers. However, almost any sophisticated electronic device that features a controllable viewing screen, including computers, tablets and smartphones can also be used to read e-books. (WIKIPEDIA)

You may also have your family tree printed on a large wall chart by any of the many genealogy companies who specialize in printing large family trees in both black and white or colour.

Another interesting way to document your family history and share it with others is to create a family history blog.
A blog, contraption for Web log, is a very user-friendly Web site. You do not have to write code or web design. It is like writing in your personal diary. Except that ir is online -- you open your family story blog and start to write. It can be a very efficient medium for documenting your family story and sharing it with the family.

You may use blog hosting options designed specifically for genealogists, such as on the social networking site GenealogyWise or you can sign up for a hosted blogging service, such as TypePad, or pay for a standard hosted Web site. (e.g.wordpress)

Web Site

Instead of a blog, you may opt for a website if you feel like doing some design and writing a bit of code. Another option would be to use a ready made template into which you fill in all your family story data. For example:

The open-source software WEBTREES offers the opportunity of hosting your family tree where you manage your family tree and decide who can view it. It requires  domain and hosting subscriptions. It is advisable to install WEBTREES 1.7.3 on a local server  for PHP 5.3 or WEBTREES 1.4.6 for PHP 5.2 before attempting to publish your family tree online.

WEBTREES LAUNCHPAD Download and unzip the required version. Upload the files to an empty folder on your web server. Open your web browser and type the URL for your webtrees site. The webtrees setup wizard will start automatically.
